Things to do in and around Yzerfontein
Take a walk on the 16-mile beach at Yzerfontein; rent a canoe or kayak from Yzerfontein Sea Sport; go on a horseback safari; visit the game farm at Buffelsfontein; see a show at Evita's Perron in Darling; do a chocolate and wine pairing at Ormonde Wine Estate or taste local wines at Blake's Family Wine and Darling Cellars. Visit Yzer Bru, our busy little brewery just next door to Kaijaiki Country Inn and make sure you do not miss Darling Olive Farm on your way to Darling Sweets where you can buy some toffee souvenirs. Make sure to visit Postberg (a completely undisturbed floral landscape in the West Coast National Park) during August and September and go for a picnic/braai afterwards at Tsaarsbank. You might just be lucky enough to spot some whales! Some of the sightseeing attractions are listed below.
West Coast National Park
Just inland from the secluded harbour of Saldanha Bay one finds the azure waters of the Langebaan Lagoon, focal point of the West Coast National Park.
Buffelsfontein Reserve
Buffelsfontein Game & Nature Reserve is a private game reserve situated on the R27 in the heart of the West Coast, a Malaria free zone. Come and enjoy what we have to offer, from magnificent wildlife to superb South African scenery.
!Khwa ttu
!Khwa ttu, the San Education and Culture Centre, 70 km north-west of Cape Town offers you the unique experience of being introduced to the world of the descendants of the first indigenous people of southern Africa.
Darling Olives
Darling Olives is located just 3 km out of Darling towards Yzerfontein, nestled amidst vineyards, grazing cattle and olive groves.
Farm bread is baked daily in a wood burned oven. Enjoy a picnic on the farm among wild flowers with our bread, olive jams, olive marmalade, Labneh cheese, olives and olive paste in the springtime. For desert you can sample our olive chocolate!
Evita se Perron
A truly unique South African experience you'll find hard to beat. A visit to 'Evita se Perron' in the West Coast 'dorp' (small town) of Darling.
This restaurant and theatre is based in a converted old station building. The food served is delicious boerekos (traditional Afrikaans farm-fair).
Groote Post Vineyards
Groote Post is an historic 18th century farm on the Cape's West Coast where winemaking traditions have been revived by the Pentz family. Excellent choice for winetasting.
Cloof Wine Estates
Cloof produces intense, bold-flavoured wines from grapes grown under extreme conditions. Among its products are a Decanter 5 Star Award winner, a Champion Shiraz and numerous airline selections. The estate welcomes visitors for wine tasting. Details may be found on the Cloof website.
Schaap Island
Schaap Island stretches from the harbour to Schaap Island. The Sixteen Mile Beach trail stretches to the West Coast National Park and is recommended for experienced hikers.
